Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – William & Mary swept Long Island on Saturday afternoon behind an 83-76 victory at Stony Brook.
Coupled with its win at Hofstra on Thursday, the Tribe (8-7, 2-0 CAA) opened CAA play with two road wins for just the third time in school history.
The Tribe check a lot of winning boxes on Saturday. W&M shot better than 50% from the field for the sixth time in the last seven games; hit double-digit 3-pointers (12) for the sixth game in a row; dished out 20 assists (on its 28 made field goals) compared to just five turnovers; and when it needed to, tightened the screws defensively and forced the Seawolves in to turnovers against the press.
It was once again a balanced attack offensively with five guys scoring in double figures. Freshman Isaiah Mbeng led the way with a career-high 15 points on 4-of-6 from 3-point range to go with three assists and three steals. Senior Caleb Dorsey tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while brother Gabe Dorsey added 13 points on 3-of-4 from long range.
Junior Chase Lowe flirted with a triple-double tallying 11 points, six rebounds, and a career-high eight assists. Graduate student Keller Boothby added 10 points on 3-of-5 from 3-point range and handed out three assists.
Stony Brook (4-11, 0-2) jumped out to the early lead, scoring four points on its opening possession in the game's first 30 seconds. A failed 3-point opportunity by former Tribe player Ben Wight resulted in an Andre Snoddy putback and a 4-0 Seawolves lead.
A 9-0 Stony Brook run extended the home team's lead to its largest of the game at 19-11 with 11:02 left in the first half. C.J. Luster hit a trio of free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, and Colin O'Connor banked in a triple to put the Seawolves in front. Three more from the charity stripe, including two from Joe Octave pushed the SBU lead to eight.
Lowe accounted for seven points as part of an 8-0 run to put the Tribe back in front. He scored four during the spurt and then found Malachi Ndur for a top of the key 3-pointer to give the visitor a 22-21 lead.
A 10-2 run gave W&M its biggest lead of first half at seven. Gabe Dorsey capped the run with a deep 3-pointer along the right side to give the visitors at 42-35 lead.
Stony Brook knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers from Snoddy and Jared Frey to open the second half and surge in front. The Seawolves lead reached five, 51-46, on a Nick Woodard 3-pointer less than four minutes into the second half.
W&M pulled back even at 58 thanks to Mbeng. The Tribe rookie canned a 3-pointer and proceeded to steal a pass in the backcourt that led to a Malachi Ndur strong finish at the 12-minute mark.
Luster, who tallied a game-high 22 points, scored five in a row to re-establish a five-point Stony Brook advantage less than a minute later. His driving lay-up on the break gave SBU a 63-58 lead.
The Seawolves started the second half hitting seven of its first eight shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3. W&M's defense tightened and limited SBU to just 5-of-17 shooting (29.4%) and only 1-of-8 from distance (12.5%) in the final 11 minutes.
The Tribe responded with a 12-2 run to seize control of the game. Senior Matteus Case gave W&M the lead for good thanks a driving old-fashioned 3-point play. Gabe Dorsey scored seven points during the spurt, including the capping lay-up at the 7:17 mark to give W&M a 70-65 lead.
Stony Brook closed to within a point, 72-71, on a 4-play play by Luster with 5:50 remaining, but W&M answered with five quick points. Boothby knocked down a right corner 3-pointer, before a Mbeng steal led to Boothby finding Caleb Dorsey for a lay-up to push the margin back to six, 77-71, just 38 seconds later.
Leading 77-73, Mbeng hit the dagger, canning a deep, step-back 3-pointer to beat the shot clock and extend the advantage to seven with 1:17 remaining.
The Tribe shot 51.9% (28-of-54) from the floor, including 12-of-28 (42.9%) from 3-point range. On the other side, SBU finished at 45.5% (25-of-55) and just 8-of-26 (30.8%) from 3-point range. The Seawolves connected on 18-of-22 (81.8%) at the free throw line and had a 35-28 advantage on the glass. W&M forced Stony Brook into 10 turnovers and converted those miscues into 16 points.
