DeBois said the house is the fourth oldest governor's mansion in the United States that has been continuously occupied by a chief executive. Governor's mansions in Virginia, Mississippi and jllinois are older.
The Greek Revival mansion, across the street from the Texas Capitol, is filled with museum-quality 19th century furniture, including an 1830s pianoforte, chandeliers made in England around 1840-1850 and a mahogany tallcase clock in the large parlor that dates between 1793 and 1818. The oldest piece in the mansion is an American Sheridan sideboard that dates from 1790. The house, which contains 8,920 square feet, compared to the White House's approximately 55,000 square feet, is also filled with portraits of former governors and mementos left by previous first families. AUSTIN Inside the Texas Governor's Mansion, the official home of George W. Bush, the state's storied history abounds.
The white, two-story home is tilled with all things Texan: a painting entitled "Fall of the a Colt pistol that belonged to former Gov. Hardin Runnels and a bedroom named for Sam Houston, a two-term president of the Republic of Texas and a governor of the state. "I love it. This house is so important in Texas history," said Texas First Lady Laura Bush, calling the builder, Abner Cook, a genius. "1 think the spaces are comfortable and cozy without being too small." As Bush campaigns for presidency, and with the couple's daughters away at college, the two spend less time at the mansion these days.
When they are in Texas, they spend much of their free time at their ranch near Crawford, about 90 miles north of Austin. That doesn't mean the mansion is any less busy. About 24,000 tourists each year visit the home. "It's fun to show off the house," said Anne DeBois, an administrator at the mansion, "and fun to show off the governor."
