The YA fantasy series gets better and better with each book! It is total must-read if you are looking for books like ACOTAR and a must-read if you love fae books. I am still amazed that Maas wrote this at such a young age

She’s keeping secrets from Dorian, Chaol, and Nehemia as she tries to find answers to the many questions she’s uncovered in the palace. Dorian is also hiding something from everyone – particularly his father. Wrydkeys and secret identities are unraveled in this epic story.

Why Kirsten loves it

The second book in the Throne of Glass series helps lay the groundwork for the future of the story. It felt like a book whose sole purpose is to lay the foundation of the rest of the series – which it does while still managing to be entertaining. One of the most critical pieces of information in the entire series comes out in the final chapters.

Heir of Fire

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Year: 2014

Genre: YA Fantasy

More info: TOG #3

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 14+

Plot

Celaena is traveling to a new land on a quest for the King of Adarlan, but she’s actually going to uncover the truth about her past and what happened to her family. What she uncovers will change her life forever.

When Celaena knows who she is, she realizes she needs to defend her people from those trying to enslave them. She’ll put all her skills as an assassin, as well as her newly discovered fae powers, to use for this task.

Why Kirsten loves it

You know those epic training scenes in most fighting movies? The ones where the warrior keeps failing and the trainer gets tough and then in the end they show more promise than the trainer initially thought? That’s what a large chunk of this book was like. Aelin is learning to master her powers while Rowan teaches her. It was interesting to see her develop and flourish. Maeve is also a great character I hope we see more of in the future.

Queen of Shadows

Author: Sarah J Maas

Year: 2015

Genre: YA Fantasy

More info: Throne of Glass #4

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 14+

Plot

Celaena Sardothien has embraced her true identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen and she’s back in Rifthold to take down the king, free Dorain from his chains, and find the final Wyrdkey.

But this time, she’s not alone. She’s got an ally in Chaol, and her cousin, Aedion, is with her to help set up her master plot. As she works to get the Wyrdkey back from Arobynn, enemies become friends and friends become enemies.

Manon also narrates some chapters and we get an inside look at what the witches are doing throughout the book. Her story dovetails nicely into Aelin’s at the end of the book.

Why Kirsten loves it

Maas hits her stride in book 4 of the series, showing how far she’s come as a writer. The end scenes were epic but where Maas really excelled was in balancing multiple narrators. Sometimes many narrators can be confusing as the story bounces around too much or not enough, but I had no trouble keeping up with the epic tale.

Empire of Storms

Author: Sarah J Maas

Year: 2016

Genre: New Adult Fantasy

More info: Throne of Glass #5

Spice Rating:💋💋💋

Age Range: 17+

Plot

War is coming to Aelin as she tries to regain her throne with Lysandra, Rowan, and Aedion by her side. She’s sworn her heart to a warrior and her loyalty to her people. She must learn to harness the depths of her power to fight monsters and dark forces so she can fully claim her lands and defeat Erawan once and for all.

Back in Rifthold, Dorian is on the defensive against a pending witch attack. Manon is back in Rifthold too but is she a friend or foe? As Aelin goes on a quest to gain peace for her kingdom, she is tested once again and forced to decide how much she is willing to sacrifice.

Why Kirsten loves it

Up until this book, I would say the series was firmly in YA territory but the steam factor is upped quite a lot in this one – so it’s no longer appropriate for the same audience as the first few books.

Tower of Dawn

Author: Sarah J Maas

Year: 2017

Genre: New Adult Fantasy

More info: Throne of Glass #6

Spice Rating:💋💋💋

Age Range: 17+

Plot

The penultimate book in the TOG series is a bit of a departure, primarily telling the story of Aelin’s allies, Chaol and Nesryn. They are traveling to the Southern Continent to gain supporters for the pending war and heal Chaol, who was severely injured after the events of Queen of Shadows.

There, they meet Yrene, a gifted healer. As they all spend time in Torre Cesme trying to convince the khagan to join the fight, they learn more about the Valg. Maeve’s backstory is revealed and the book set the scene for the final showdown.

Why Kirsten loves it

This is not my favorite book in the series, but it gave lots of background information that you need for the final story! This book also takes place at the same time as Empire of Storms so it’s possible to tandem read the two books together!

Kingdom of Ash

Author: Sarah J Maas

Year: 2018

Genre: New Adult Fantasy

More info: Throne of Glass #7

Spice Rating:💋💋💋

Age Range: 17+

Plot

We’ve reached the final battle, but first, Aelin needs to get out of the clutches of Maeve. As Aelin fights to escape, Rowan and her allies band together for the final confrontation.

Why Kirsten loves it

I loved the conclusion of the series, but I’m sad it’s over. On one hand, I find it so frustrating that Sarah J Maas’s other series are yet done and I have to wait for them to conclude…but here I am with a concluded series and I’m disappointed that it’s over. I guess that is a testament to Maas’s epic writing skills. She sucked me in and left me with a major book hangover.

Assassin’s Blade

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Year: 2014

Genre: YA Fantasy

More info: Throne of Glass Prequel

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 14+

Plot

So this is a collection of short stories set in the TOG world BEFORE the first book in the series. It provides background on Celaena’s life before the contest that changed her life. The short stories within are:

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
The Assassin and the Desert
The Assassin and the Underworld
The Assassin and the Empire
The Assassin and the Healer

Why Kirsten loves it

The Assassin’s Guild and Celaena’s time in it are often mentioned in the main series, so it was fascinating to go back and see what she was like when she worked for Arobynn. I generally don’t like short stories, so this wasn’t my favorite, but it was interesting.

Expert Tip

There are many different ways to read the Throne of Glass series and these are the things you may want to consider when deciding how you want to read the series:

  • Sarah J Maas wrote them in the order they were released, so that’s a point worth noting for publication order lovers.
  • Chronologically, Assassin’s Blade is first and looks at Celaena’s life working for the Assassin’s Guild. If you are rereading the series, chronologically would be a cool way to do it.
  • Finally, Books 5 and 6 take place at the same time but follow different characters. If you are doing a reread, there are ways to tandem read the stories together!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Throne of Glass series order?

You can read the Throne of Glass Series in publication order, or you can read the series in chronological order as follows:
1. Assassin’s Blade (Prequel)
2. Throne of Glass
3. Crown of Midnight
4. Heir of Fire
5. Queen of Shadows
6. Empire of Storms
7. Tower of Dawn
8. Kingdom of Ash

What is the best order to read the Throne of Glass series?

There is some debate about if you should read TOG chronologically or in publication order and I believe that publication order is the proper way – at least on your first read-through. Assassin’s Blade won’t pack the same punch emotionally if you read it before the rest of the series.
